Week 2: Historical Painting Class Supply List
LIVING HISTORY WITH MARY JOSEPHSON
Students will need to bring the following to class:
Please bring paint you like to use or are comfortable with. If you are a beginner perhaps a set of colors would be a good choice, allowing for experimentation. I know how expensive paint can be. Please bring what you can comfortably afford. I will bring my paint bag to help artists experiment with colors new to them.
Paint Color Suggestions- 2 yellow-such as Cadmium or Hansa Yellow Medium, Yellow Ochre or Gold Ochre
- 2 red-such as Cadmium Red Medium or Napthol Red, and Alizarin Crimson or Alizarin Permanent
- 3 blue-such as Cobalt Blue or Ultramarine Blue, Prussian Blue or Phthalo Blue, Cerulean blue or cobalt teal or manganese blue hue
- 3 green-such as Permanent Green Light or Cadmium Green or Chartreuse, Olive green or Sap green, Cobalt green or VIridian or Phthalo green
- 2 purple-such as Cobalt violet or Manganese violet, DIoxazine Purple or Ultramarine Violet
- 1 orange such as cadmium orange or Permanent Orange
- 2 brown-Raw or Burnt Sienna, Raw or Burnt Umber
- 1 black or Van Dyke Brown
- 1 white (if using oil paint quick dry white might be a good idea)
- palette to put paint on and mix paint
- painting medium, such as Gamblin galkyd for oil paint or Golden mediums for acrylic paint
- odorless mineral spirits if using oil paints
- variety of brush sizes from 0 to 20, some flat, some round, (5 flat brushes, 5 round brushes) you may choose stiff bristles or soft bristles, synthetic bristles are fine
- soap to clean brushes
- canvas or wood to paint on in a variety of sizes, or paper prepared with gesso example: 8 X 10, 9 X 12, 11 X 14, 11 x 17, 16 X 20, 18 X24, 20 X 24, 20 X 28, 24 X 36, 30 X 36 inches
- paper towels, heavy duty or cloth rags to wipe excess paint on
- a painting smock or apron to protect your clothing
