READ THE CHALLENGE DESCRIPTIONS:
"Random Tube Challenge" - Ruth Armitage
Are you tired of following a ‘recipe’ type color palette of complements or triads? Want to add some variety to your palette and shake things up? If you’re ready to move beyond painting the colors you observe, this challenge is for you! Follow along as Ruth shows how you can achieve an exciting painting using 3 randomly chosen colors plus black & white. Suitable for any medium.
"Stitched Incantation Scroll" - Carolyn Hazel Drake
An experimental textile designed to be a protective talisman based on a text that holds personal meaning for you. For this creative challenge, you’ll create a protective talisman based on a text that holds personal meaning for you. You’ll loosely translate the ideas and themes from your poetry or prose into a color palette and abstracted shapes, lines, and textures rendered in stitch on fabric. The finished piece can be rolled into a scroll and carried with you or gifted to someone you love.
"Abstract Yourself" - Trish Harding
We all look in the mirror every morning but do we really observe what you look like with someone else’s eyes! We will think outside the box and delve honestly and deeply into our true self abstracted!
"Representational Collage" - Susan Schenk
Create realistic 2D art using paper and glue and a secret method which bypasses the need for drawing skills. Collage is a forgiving medium. The only rule is that it must make you happy. This challenge introduces the idea of creating a realistic image that might be cheerfully confused with a painting. You’ll produce a frame-ready 8 x 10 gem.
"Accordion Book: Thinking as Form" - Sarah Wolf Newlands
Do you ever feel boxed-in by your store-bought sketchbook? Do you make drawing, take notes, and gather inspirational materials, then lose track of them in boxes and portfolios? If you answered yes to either of these questions, the “Thinking as Form” challenge is for you! For this challenge, you will explore a theme or concept by constructing an accordion book. Merge thinking and making through the process of constructing your own visual research field guide.
While we are still so disappointed that our regular programming has been canceled this summer due to the pandemic, we are excited to have the opportunity to stay in touch through social media and offer these awesome challenges from some familiar faces.
