Extreme Experimental Drawing: Trish Harding

Trish Harding aims to help broaden students’ understanding of drawing through a fresh experimental approach to the study of works on paper/charcoal & conte crayon. Students will be guided to take drawing to the next level from representation to expressive communication concepts based on perception.
Using the figure, landscape, & still life we will consider the following:
- design exercises
- simplification processes
- experience extreme mark-making
No class material fee.
CLASS SUPPLY LIST
Students need to bring:
- 1 favorite item that you own (can be anything!) to add to our communal still life
- 1 rough newsprint pad, 24x18”
- 1 pad Strathmore Drawing Paper, 24x18
- 1 pad tracing paper 24x18
- 2 sheets Rives BFK Heavyweight Printmaking Paper
- 2 sheets Stonehenge Printmaking Paper
- 2 sheets Mi Tientes Paper BLACK
- 1 stick Big Bob’s Charcoal
- 1 package medium size vine charcoals
- 1 stick soft compressed Pitt Charcoal (Faber/Castell)
- 1 matchbox set of 4 Sketching Colors Conte Crayon (Dick Blick)
- 1 kneaded eraser
- 1 drawing board to accommodate 24x18 drawing paper

Drawing – Trish Harding (Scholarship Applicant)
Scholarship applicants must pay Room, Board & Class Material Fee, and fill out application when selecting this option. If awarded student's tuition will be covered by the scholarship. If not awarded, students can choose to pay for tuition or be refunded. Bunk rooms are the only lodging available for scholarship awardees. Please bring your own bedding or add "linens" to your cart to have them provided for you.
Trish Harding was born in Washington State and grew up on Lummi Island literally feet from the water’s edge with a magnificent view of Mt Baker at the same time. Her formal art training includes Western Washington State College (now WWU), and The Academy of Art College, San Francisco.
Recognized as a Northwest Painter of regional icons she is best known for her land and seascapes as well as her urban industrial landscapes due to her work inspired by the deconstruction of the Georgia Pacific Paper Mill near her studio.
Her love of plein air painting offers an in the moment quality to her brush strokes and application of paint She has facilitated the Annual Downtown Bellingham Plein Air Paint Out and Exhibition (PAPO) event for 12 years.
She also does considerable figurative work in her studio, Studio UFO. Her paintings in oil, acrylic and pastel offer a personal narrative style. Her most recent studio work utilizes personal meanings and perspective to push the boundaries of her previous work farther into the realm of symbolism. Using icons such as the nest, circle, & sphere she is driven to express new and even surreal feelings that are layered throughout her work.
In 2017 Trish was selected as the Skagit Valley International Tulip Festival Poster Artist. Her image recently received the Gold Pinnacle Award from the International Festivals & Events Association for Best Commemorative Poster in 2017.
Trish is owner of Studio UFO in Bellingham, which has proven to be the hot spot in town for leading edge art and art education. Trish not only teaches at Studio UFO she also has been teaching at Whatcom Community College for over 20years, and Creative Arts Community for 14 years, and countless workshops around the Pacific Northwest. She is an art trip leader to various places in the world including Paris, France, San Miguel & Mexico City Mexico, Yellowstone Park & Cody, Wyoming, Ghost Ranch, New Mexico, Palm Springs, and Victoria BC, Canada.
