Textile Collage—Carolyn Hazel Drake
August 5 - 11, 2018
Prepare to be seduced by the rich colors and luxurious, tactile nature of hand-dyed textiles! In this class, we’ll begin by looking at folk artists and 20th century modernists -- both use shape and color masterfully as dominant compositional elements. A series of creative exercises will lead you intuitively towards a personal visual vocabulary all your own, expressed first in cut-paper collage. We’ll translate our collages into textile art using hand applique methods including raw- and turned-edge. Hand-dyed cottons and wools in warm and cool tones will be provided for you, as will natural materials for dyeing a custom palette of threads. You’ll also get a kit with the recommended needles, pins, and pattern transfer materials. As the week progresses, I’ll share several approaches for finishing and displaying your textile art. No experience with sewing or textiles needed! Ideal for painters or collage artists looking for a new means of expression.
Class Material Fee: $30.

Instructor Profile: Carolyn Hazel Drake
I am a mostly self-taught artist from a long line of craftswomen. I’m is a third generation Oregonian, and my aesthetic is grounded in the colors and textures of the Pacific Northwest. My eye for color, pattern, and detail was cultivated early on in my mother’s quilt store, as was my appreciation for handwork and being a part of a creative community. In addition to my studio practice, I teach workshops in the Pacific Northwest, and am a longtime public educator in the arts. I have worked with all levels of learners, and my belief in the inherent creative potential of my students guides my approach to teaching. It is a source of great joy to me to see my students experience self-discovery through their own creative process.
Linens are included in all lodging EXCEPT for bunks. You can bring your own bedding or add this item to your cart to have Menucha provide you with pillow, blanket, sheets, and towels. 2 week campers must add 2 "linens" to cart to cover the cost of both weeks.
