BIO For me it is all about intention, examples might be: what kind of story do I want to tell, or where do I want to take the viewer. Long before I pick up the brush I am constantly observing different aspects of reality and mining my memory, quite naturally the two become fused. My desire through this reconciliation of observed reality and related memories is to create a two dimensional fiction that authentically tells a deeper and more thoughtful truth. Originally I painted in oils, receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts (Painting) from Portland State University. In the 1980's I continued my passion for design, receiving a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering from Oregon State University. In the 90’s, I was able to return to my roots and concentrate exclusively on painting. In addition to studio & “plein air” work, I have studied a variety of painting methods during the past few years with other well-known artists, including Ted Nuttall, ArnieWesterman, George James, and Alex Powers. My work has been displayed locally and nationally. Recent awards include: Chamber of Commerce Prize at Emerald Arts Centers National Show 2008, First Place Watercolor Award Beaverton Showcase 2008, National First Place AMI Award 2007, Mayors Choice Award Beaverton Showcase 2007. Cover painting for American Mothers Summer magazine 2007. These paintings reflect my formal art education and a deep understanding of composition, color theory, drawing, and painting. My process varies, but typically I will spend time with the subject and build understanding through photographs, informal sketches and color studies. During the watercolor painting process, color is carefully placed layer by layer on the surface. Gradually, the elements emerge and the details are revealed. As a native Oregonian and a world traveler, I am inspired by my surroundings; always looking outward, seeking to explore the extraordinary within the ordinary.
