The Craft of Short Story
WEEK 2 AUG 10 - 16

We will uses mornings as a laboratory for better understanding of the technical elements of the short story: voice, point of view, dialogue, character development, and the handling of narrative time. Afternoons will be dedicated to analyzing model stories by master writers and to critique student work. Writers are welcome to bring a story for peer critique.
About Martha
Martha Gies has been publishing short stories for twenty years. Her fiction and essays appear widely in literary quarterlies, including Zyzzyva, Orion and The Sun, and in various anthologies. She is the author of Up All Night, a documentary portrait of 23 people who work graveyard shift, selected by the Oregonian as one of the Ten Best Regional Books of 2004.
